The End Begins for Splinter Cell
[CR6 11/12/2008 @ 01:51 AM] ( Post a comment )
Ubisoft is in the midst of hyping it's newest Tom Clancy title End War which appears to include an effort to give characters from all the Clancy game franchises a cameo appearance. Here's a short and somewhat enigmatic story that gives us a peek into how Splinter Cell ties in.

No Splinter Cell: Conviction in 2008
[CR6 07/25/2008 @ 12:29 AM] ( Post a comment )
GameSpot is reporting that Splinter Cell 5: Conviction has once again been delayed and will not be released this year. According to Ubi's latest financial report, the game is now scheduled to be released some time in Ubisoft's 2009-2010 fiscal year (April 2009 to March 2010).

Splinter Cell Novel #4: Fallout
[CR6 10/19/2007 @ 02:59 AM] ( Post a comment )
For those of you who can't wait until next year to get your Sam Fisher fix with SC5: Conviction, perhaps this is the next best thing: the fourth SC novel entitled "Fallout" is due to be released early next month. Make sure you check out Jackie's short and sweet interview with Fallout's author.

Interview with Central Clancy Writer
[CR6 09/20/2007 @ 01:25 AM] ( Post a comment )
I missed seeing this last month, but better late than never :-) Jackie has come out with another one of her fantastic SC-related interviews. This time, the Q&A is with Central Clancy Writer Richard Dansky who works at Ubisoft's Red Storm studio, but whose writing credits have shown up in a whole range of Ubisoft titles. Check out what Richard has to say about the Splinter Cell franchise here!

Conviction Delayed Until 2008
[CR6 08/01/2007 @ 12:35 PM] ( Post a comment )
Both GameSpot and IGN have spotted information in Ubisoft's recent financial report that the release date of Splinter Cell 5: Conviction has been pushed back to the first quarter of 2008.

Ubisoft has been churning out a new iteration of Splinter Cell every year for the last few years, and although this may be good for Ubi's bottom line, it may not necessarily be a good thing for the series overall. In fact, IGN recently included Splinter Cell in their recent article about "How to Kill a Franchise." Here's a snippet:
Nowadays though, people are buying fewer and fewer of Sam Fisher's adventures each time out. With Ubisoft juggling the game between their Montreal and Shanghai studios, it's no wonder that the series has lost any form of continuity. Not so much in the story, but in the actual gameplay mechanics.

Doctor's Orders: Stop releasing Splinter Cell games every year. This should not be on a yearly release cycle; it's too good of a franchise to rush it out the door. While it is true that tossing the game back and forth between two studios gives each more time to work on their game, the feel of the game changes too much between each iteration.

Conviction Video Interview & Dev Blog
[CR6 07/02/2007 @ 01:27 AM] ( Post a comment )
Check out Game Invasion for a good 3-minute interview with SC5: Conviction Producer Mathieu Ferland at the recent UbiDays. He talks about the progression of Sam Fisher going from special agent to double agent to fugitive; and the gameplay mechanic of stealth in the game from using light and shadow to improvising with anything in the environment. (Hmm ... some inspiration from Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne?)

Ubi has also announced that you can now read Conviction "Game Manager" Thomas Geffroyd's developer's blog.

Gamasutra Interviews Central Clancy Writer
[CR6 06/22/2007 @ 11:50 PM] ( Post a comment )
Gamasutra has published an informative Q&A with Richard Dansky whose official title is "Central Clancy Writer and Manager of Design for Red Storm Entertainment." Find out what his job entails, get some great insight into the field of game writing, and read what Richard's favorite moments are in games he's been involved in.

With regards to his work on the Splinter Cell series, here's what Richard has to say: "From a writing standpoint, Splinter Cell: Double Agent was definitely my favorite. Any writer will tell you that it's more fun to write the villain than the hero, and Double Agent had some great, fun villains to write."

Splinter Cell V = Conviction
